Hotel Safety Tips

November 30, 2022 by Ann Donnelly

5 Things You Must Do Upon Check In

You must do a few key things immediately upon check-in before you throw yourself into vacation mode. Your accommodations are largely essential for the overall success of your vacation.  How comfortable you are will have a huge impact on how you start and end your day.  Bad things can happen while traveling but if you consider the following hotel safety tips, you can improve your odds!

Daytime Arrival

Try to plan your arrival during daytime hours.  Every location will be easier to navigate and safer.  Using Google Street View is a good way to prepare for your hotel safety in advance. Research a particular area and see what it truly looks like.

Welcome Information

Read the Welcome Packet/Instructions.  Many hotels & Airbnb will have all sorts of information ready for you.  This may include wi-fi passwords, pool usage, and local food options.

Inspect Your Room

Once you have entered your space, inspect the room/rooms thoroughly.  Open all the doors, making sure everything is in working order.  Peek behind curtains & make sure all windows are properly closed and locked.  You may also consider testing the water for heat, testing the heat/ac, flushing the toilet & checking the shower drain.  If you find issues with any of these items, it is much easier to have them repaired if they are reported upon arrival. Hotel safety is whatever you deem as a priority, ask for assistance in order to feel safe.

The Peephole – Don’t Forget About It

Once you’ve ended the day and are in for the night, cover that peephole.  Unfortunately, people have not realized that peephole security is a real threat to hotel safety.  There are products like reverse peephole viewers for sale that allow the user to clearly see what’s happening inside the room. An easy way to manage this is to stuff some toilet paper inside the hole or if you can, carry some tape in your toiletry bag to cover it.

Hotel Safety – always use the extra lock!

Always double-lock your doors.  Occasionally, there are times when a room is double booked.  The best way to prevent someone from entering your room with a key is to use the extra lock that has been provided. These include deadbolts, security chains, and swinging metal locks.  If you determine that the locks are defective, this is a perfect time to request a different room.

Make Hotel Safety a Part of your Plan

When we are traveling, we sometimes arrive at our accommodations feeling tired or in a hurry to start our vacation. Remember to not let your guard down regardless of the circumstances. Just take a few moments to manage the things on this hotel safety list and you’ll be on your way to a smoother vacation.
