28 Ways to Overcome Perfectionism & Procrastination with Your Content Creation
So many people are afraid to write articles, marketing emails, or social media posts because they think they are not good enough.
Lack of confidence is usually due to a lack of experience—not in what they do professionally but in creating marketing content.
If you don’t get started, you don’t build the experience.
Or, you may get started, see little response, and think it wasn’t good enough and not working.
Here are 28 ways to overcome perfectionism and procrastination with your content creation:
- Give yourself grace. Give yourself and your content a chance to work.
- Start building the habit of consistently creating and delivering content. Make time for marketing and communicating with potential clients a priority that directly affects your revenue.
- Make a commitment to yourself that you can keep, then build on it.
- Schedule non-negotiable times each month or each week to create content.
- Learn when you are most creative during the day and what periods work best for you for this task. Can you sit for a solid hour and “crank out” an article, or do you prefer to work in smaller chunks of time, etc.?
- If you don’t schedule sufficient time and always create at the last minute, you are probably not doing a great job, so avoid the last-minute rush.
- To start, keep it simple, short, and sweet. Think MVP, minimum viable product. Good enough is good enough. Don’t get bogged down in details.
- Find tools to help you create and deliver content more easily.
- The elements needed for the content should be organized and easy to access and use, such as templates, images, videos, etc.
- Work with a coach to improve your content creation skills, confidence, or resilience.
- I provide my clients with a template that guides the user through the critical elements needed for a good “pitch” that works for whatever format or platform.
- Work on self-improvement, reading, practicing mindfulness, etc.
- If you are concerned that the world will find out that you aren’t an expert in all areas of your business or industry:
- Get real! Examine that thought and if it is true.
- If you lack sufficient expertise, what work must you do to build your knowledge and skill in the necessary areas?
- Focus on the areas that you can speak on.
- Interview an expert or research, build your knowledge, and write an informative article.
- Get an accountability or a content creation partner.
- Ignite a spark!
- Get clarity on your offering and how it meets your audience’s needs and wants. Provide content that communicates this and provides your audience value, information, or entertainment. By reading your content or taking action, they aren’t doing you a favor—they are getting something they need or want from you.
- Let your passion for your business shine through. Write about what you are most passionate about related to your business that will also interest your audience.
- Do you love the sound of your voice or enjoy taking pictures? While it’s best to deliver content on all the channels your audience uses, focus on the channels or media that interest you the most – to get started.
- Listen to and celebrate good feedback and your wins. Start by deciding on some rewards for yourself for completing tasks you avoided before and then on meeting other goals, raising the bar as your performance improves.
- If it is from a respected source, take the negative feedback on board, learn the lesson, and move on.
- Is writing not your thing? Or, are the demands on your time so restricted that it is financially unviable for you to spend time on content creation?
- If so, delegate content creation to another team member or outsource.
- If you are not creating the content yourself, you must develop guidelines, a brand playbook, etc., to ensure that the content is appropriate and matches the tone of your organization.
- Depending on who generates the content, you may need to provide topic ideas, draft or base content, etc.
- Determine who must approve the content before publishing and ensure sufficient time.

Be vulnerable and authentic. No one is perfect, and no one expects you to be. Being yourself will attract the right people to you and your business.
