International tourism news in the first week of 2023 showed some continuing global trends like the use of government COVID relief funding to bail out and build up regional tourism and the debate about the effect of tourism on regions that were previously less accessible, like Antarctica. Newer trends include raising tourism taxes for “quality vs. quantity of tourists” and newer forms of niche tourism (slaughterhouse tourism, mines tourism). From “Smalltown USA” to luxury destination islands of the Pacific, tourism industry professionals and regional tourism leaders are planning ahead and looking for creative ways to attract travelers that now have the entire World at their fingertips. More and more regions are looking at how tourism can leave their area better than before, and not just in revenues and job creation. The topic that seems to interest most countries’ tourism leaders? Chinese tourists are back. Second topic of most interest? Croatia, now in the Eurozone, as Europeans destination of choice.
